Report by Tommy Doleman

There were goals galore in round five of the Westfield FFA Cup preliminary rounds with the final eight teams now confirmed.

A ten-man Cockburn City were one of the teams to progress, with a late winner edging out South West Phoenix 3-2 in an absorbing tie at Dalmatinac Park.

Cockburn coach Scott Miller said his team is driven by their appearance in the FFA Cup Round of 32 last year.

“To experience that Australia-wide stage was really fun last year,” he said.
“The boys loved that bit of exposure. We were obviously lucky to get a trip away last year and I’m sure they’d love to have another crack this year.
“It’s a very different competition. If I was analysing it like our league games, I’d probably be pulling my hair out, but it’s about winning and getting through and we showed great character to do so.”

Miller was also pleased his side bounced back quickly after the weekend’s defeat to Stirling.

“As a coach you normally have a week to think about things, but to have a game three days later was good,” he said.
“We switched the boys onto this game quickly and it was good to get the late winner tonight, which is always nice.”
Cockburn made a quick start to things with a goal inside four minutes as Harry O’Brien crossed in from the right and Daniel Robinson got across his marker to poke the ball home.

They remained in control in the opening half hour, though they could have doubled their lead when Kieran Quinn denied Robinson on the line.

Phoenix struck against the tide as Jayden Prosser latched onto a long punt from Adam Guthridge and kept his cool to equalise.

Goalkeeper Guthridge then made a superb double save, firstly touching Jesse Lazzaro’s shot onto the post, before beating away Calvin Whitney’s drive from range.

Lazzaro had another chance in the second half when he blazed over the bar and it only got worse for the winger when he went off moments later with an injury.

The hosts regained the lead with a nice set piece routine as Kenel Mouithys flicked on Cameron Edwards’ corner and O’Brien stooped to head in.

It was level again seven minutes later as Bright Ababio overlapped down the left and drove across goal where Ryan Stewart was at the back post to squeeze it past Luke Radonich.

When Whitney saw red with 15 minutes to go, momentum shifted to the Phoenix who had several chances to win it but it would be Cockburn to strike late.

Edwards carved out a through ball in heavy traffic and unmarked Reuben Tristao to slide his finish beyond Guthridge.

In other ANZAC Day Westfield FFA Cup action, State League Division One side Dianella White Eagles upset NPLWA club ECU Joondalup 3-1, while State League Division Two side Gwelup Croatia side put five past NPLWA side Mandurah City winning 5-1.

The final eight teams in Round six of the Westfield FFA Cup preliminary rounds will be made of four NPLWA teams, two State League Division One teams and two State League Division Two teams.
