Williams excited by fellow West Aussie Kerr

Football West News

The scintillating scoring form of two Westfield Matildas excitement machines has West Australian goalkeeper Lydia Williams ready to sit back and enjoy the show in the inaugural Cup of Nations.

Attacking aces Sam Kerr and Caitlin Foord head into camp at the very top of their games following prolific seasons spent terrorising Westfield W-League defences.

Perth Glory captain Kerr struck a stunning 17 goals in 13 games to scoop her second straight Golden Boot ahead of runner-up Foord, who notched 10 in 14 after successfully converting to an out-and-out centre-forward role for Grand Final winners Sydney FC.

Experienced shot-stopper Williams provides the foundation at the other end of the pitch for the national team and thinks the pair are primed to wreak havoc when the four-team tournament involving New Zealand, Argentina and Korea Republic gets underway on February 28.

“They’ve always performed well both individually and in the team, but I think right now both have found their niche,” Williams told matildas.footballaustralia.com.au.

“They have such confidence and self-belief, both of them are so unpredictable on the ball.

“To have both in the front line with that confidence and flair, you’re just like ‘okay, do your thing, I’ll just sit back and watch’. It’s something you really need to nurture.

“It’s a little bit different for strikers and attacking players that they can be as creative as they want, you don’t really put any restrictions on them, and they can pull magic out of a hat.

“I think the fact our attackers in the W-League have been doing that is a really good sign.

“We’ve always been a defensively strong team, so I think that will never change. But I think the fact there is so much flair in the front line right now is perfect.”

Williams, Kerr and Lisa De Vanna are the three West Australians in the squad.

Australia commence the Cup of Nations against the Football Ferns in Sydney before meeting Korea Republic in Brisbane and Argentina in Melbourne.

The tournament marks the team’s final matches on home soil before the FIFA Women’s World Cup kicks off in June and Williams, an international since 2005, is looking forward to sharing the excitement with supporters.

ALLEWAY: Cup of Nations no simple send-off

“They’re three quality games and to play them in three different cities in Australia is really exciting,” the Melbourne City shot-stopper said.

“We’re looking forward to getting back on the pitch and playing.

“I don’t think we’ve ever really done this before. To have a pretty big send-off in the form of a tournament I think is amazing.

“In the last four years it’s been incredible the reach we’ve gotten with the public and throughout the sport.”
