Windmills blown away by Ashfield’s fast start

Report by Dennis Gedling

Three goals in the first 11 minutes set up Ashfield for an easy 4-0 win away at Morley Windmills on Saturday in State League Division One.

A brace from Patrick Quinn and a goal from Ismail Bangura all but put the game to bed before the home side had barely blinked at Wotton Reserve.

And Bangura got his second early in the second half to make sure there was no threat of a slip-up.

Ashfield went 1-0 up after only two minutes when Quinn took advantage of an awful clearance to lash the ball home. And with just five minutes gone it was 2-0 when some exquisite lead-up work gave powerful striker Bangura an easy finish.

Morley were already chasing shadows and their plight worsened on 11 minutes when Ashfield were awarded a penalty which Quinn put away.

Morley must have been in a daze at their shocking start but they eventually created a couple of openings as midfielder Igor Novakovic fired just wide before Dion Berman’s shot from the edge of the area hit the crossbar. Ashfield were then forced to make a change when Mike Kenny was violently ill on the sidelines and couldn’t continue.

If Morley were hoping to gain a toehold into the game then they needed to make a better start to the second half than they had the first. Unfortunately they didn’t learn their lesson and just three minutes in Bangura scored his second on the break.

From there the air went completely out of the game as Morley struggled to land a blow on their rivals.

After the game Ashfield coach Ash Wardle was full of praise for his side, saying they had worked on taking their chances after not be able to convert in previous weeks.

“If we did the right things then the results would come our way and it did with the early goal in the second half,” Wardle said.

Morley Windmills coach John Castrilli was obviously not happy with the performance following on from a capitulation the previous week against Joondalup City after being 3-0 up.

“We’re bitterly disappointed and the boys are better than that. We just have to regroup and hope to do better next week,” he said.

Morley will travel to Dianella next week hoping to get back on track while Ashfield are at home to South West Phoenix.
