Winner takes all when Socceroos meet Honduras

Football Federation Australia

More than 75,000 football fans are expected to descend on Stadium Australia tomorrow night to watch the Caltex Socceroos take on Honduras in the crucial FIFA World Cup Intercontinental Play-off (CONCACAF-Asian Zone) 2nd leg qualifier.

Australia need to beat Honduras in this second leg to qualify, having drawn 0-0 last Sunday in Honduras during the first leg of the playoff.

In the final media call before the match, coach Ange Postecogloou said his side’s approach won’t change when the his side takes to the pitch in Sydney.

“One goal may be enough,” he said.

“But our approach is we start aggressively and as long as the game goes – 90 minutes or 120 – we’ll keep going at the same level.

“And it’ll be up to the opposition to try and stop us and keep up with us. We’ve never sat back after scoring and never changed anything when we’ve conceded.

“In games like tomorrow, that helps. The players aren’t focussing on a scoreline.

“They’re focussing our football, our tempo for as long as the game goes.

“And we usually come out on top.”

Postecoglou remains confident the game plan will be successful.

“We forced them to defend [in the first leg in San Pedro Sula] and still played our football, and that’s going to be the key tomorrow night,” Postecolou added.

“Tomorrow night is us dictating the game and if we do that – as we’ve done in the past – we’ll be hard to stop.

“This pitch [at Stadium Australia] will suit us. It didn’t the other day [in Honduras].

“If we can play like that on a pitch like that I reckon we can do a whole lot better on a pitch that does suit us.”
