The Gold Fields Under 15 State Team signed off with a win at the Jinshan International Youth Football Championship on Wednesday as they beat China Youth 2-1 in Shanghai.
Goals from Sammy Cook and Carl Dias either side of half-time gave the Football West outfit a two-goal advantage.
And although the home team pulled one back, there was no denying Head Coach Garry Church and his team the victory their efforts at the tournament richly deserved.
The Gold Fields Under 15 State side beat China 2-1
He said: “Today was probably the hottest it’s been since we arrived in Shanghai. China have two teams in the tournament. We drew with the other side 1-1 and so knew this was a big one and we wanted to finish off on a high.”
Church said he and Assistant Coach Brad Hassell felt the players were a little flat before the game so they gave them a motivational chat just before kick-off.
It had the desired effect.
“The lads were straight into it and within six minutes we were 1-0 up,” Church said.
“There was a great run from Carl Dias on the right, he put over a low cross to Daniel Faichney who engaged the goalkeeper then passed to Sammy Cook, who stroked the ball home.”
WA threatened a second goal and it came not long after half-time.
“There was a long ball into China’s half. Gordon Perkins brought it down and switched play to the right for Carl Dias. He used his pace to go past defender, one-on-one with the goalkeeper and slotted it into the far corner.
“We had a handful more chances but couldn’t put them away. Halfway through the second half a mistake in the defence saw the ball played in to an opponent just outside the box and he made no mistake in putting it away.
“A few minutes later Jamie Swan went on a great run and was brought down in the box but the referee gave a free-kick outside.
“This gave the players the grit and determination to see the game through to the end.
“It was pleasing to see the players enjoying the moment of victory and a great end to the tournament.”
The win wrapped up a successful tournament for the Gold Fields Under 15 State Team, with one win, two draws and one loss.
Gold Fields is the sponsor of all of Football West’s State Teams.
