Division One: Subiaco look to youth and experience

Football West News

The State League Division One season starts on Saturday with the spotlight on the three teams relegated from the NPL WA.

Subiaco appointed Basil Lenzo as head coach during the close season and he moved quickly in signing former Perth SC great Antonio Naglieri and another ex-Azzurri title-winning defender Dom De Felice.

But Lenzo has also attracted youth to go with the experience. Midfielder Liam Fyfe has come in from ECU Joondalup while striker Shay Donovan has joined from Perth SC. Donovan displayed his finishing ability when the Azzurri won the Smarter than Smoking U18s Junior Cup final last August and if he can make the step up to seniors he could be one to watch.

Subiaco are away in their first match, travelling to Olympic Kingsway who did not lose a game on their way to the Division Two title last year.

Forrestfield United, who host Mandurah City at 7pm, are another club with a new man in charge. Graham Normanton, who took Olympic Kingsway on their unbeaten run, has already made his mark at Hartfield Park by delivering the State League Night Series title.

Joondalup United are the only one of the relegated trio to have retained their head coach. And Nick Jennings and his staff would love nothing more than kicking off the season with three points when they face UWA Nedlands at Forrest Park after enduring a torrid 2018 in which they won just one league game.

Elsewhere,  Ashfield SC are at home to Western Knights while Fremantle City play Morley Windmills.

Knights have Ivan Zuvela as head coach for 2019 and captured Cameron Yorke from Gwelup Croatia and re-signed Johnny Chalmers from Joondalup United.

– Following the resignation of South West Phoenix from the league there will be 11 teams in Division One in 2019. That means there will be a bye each week, with Gwelup Croatia having no match in Round One.
