Redbacks rally to beat Balcatta

Report by Peter Simcox

Northern Redbacks began their Women’s Premier League season with a come-from-behind 2-1 win against Balcatta at Grindleford Reserve on Sunday afternoon.

The hosts were ahead at the break thanks to a goal from skipper Christiane Astorp.

But led by inspirational skipper Shawn Billam and defender Bronwyn Studman, Redbacks hit back with goals by Rennee Leota and Sarah Carroll to ensure they made a winning start to the new season.

The visitors side were on the front foot to start the game, with Chloe Alaga and Carroll going close early.

But against the run of play Balcatta opened the scoring on 13 minutes. Liane Cook’s cross from the right picked out Astorp and the skipper made no mistake.

Balcatta were now on top and Caitlin Doeglas hit the outside of the post moment later, before Cook’s shot on the run was saved by Elenor Blackmore.

Doeglas then had a shot saved Blackmore, before the Redbacks keeper was out bravely to save at the feet of Doeglas.

Eleven minutes into the second half the hosts levelled. A corner from Carla Bennett wasn’t dealt with and Leota fired home at the back post.

Carroll then blazed over the top when well place, before Gabby Del Bal Busco produced a great reaction save to thwart Bennett’s in-swinging corner.

But the Redbacks pressure was rewarded with the lead on 70 minutes. Sophia Neal raced into the penalty area and found Carroll, who finished clinically past Del Busco.

In other first round games on Sunday Fremantle City beat Stirling Panthers 2-1 at Yuluma Reserve, while a brace from Jaime Duncanson gave Queens Park a 2-1 win against the Hyundai Football West NTC side at Coker Park.
