Mandurah hit Saints for six in Metro Cup final

Report by Edward Nixon

Mandurah City produced a dominant team performance to secure the 2019 Women’s Metro Cup with a 6-1 win over Perth Saints FC at Lark Hill Sportsplex on Sunday.

Katrina Breen scored twice, while Melanie Pashkevoitz, Katie Bogmil, Danielle Brown and Nicole Dale also found the back of the net as Mandurah claimed cup glory.

Mandurah coach Oriol Fernandez said he was “very, very proud” of his team.

“The girls just nailed it,” he said. “It’s something to remember. I said to the girls in 10 years they’ll remember this game.”

In wet and windy conditions, it was City who started the brighter of the two sides as the ever-dangerous Bogunil set up Breen for the first chance of the game, but the Mandurah forward blazed over.

After a strong start, Mandurah got their just reward after 19 minutes as Steph Whild’s free-kick was nodded in by Pashkevoitz, who rose above Perth goalkeeper Zoey Congreve.

Congreve redeemed herself just five minutes later with a one-on-one save which prevented Breen from doubling Mandurah’s advantage.

Mandurah’s second goal would come, however, as Bogunil’s long-range effort nestled into the back of the net, before Brown dispatched a penalty on the stroke of half-time to give City a comfortable 3-0 lead heading into the sheds.

After the change of ends it was more of the same. Dale found the back of the net with a cool finish just seven minutes after the restart, then Breen then made it 5-0 just before the hour-mark. Six minutes from time the Mandurah striker grabbed her second after linking up well with Bogunil.

To their credit, Perth didn’t let their heads drop as they scored the final goal of the game through Jeannie McGonagle, whose long-range effort caught Mandurah goalkeeper Vanessa Alluck off her line.
