Action from last year's Africa Down Under Cup
Africa Down Under Cup bigger than ever
Football West News
Football West’s annual Africa Down Under Cup event takes place this Thursday over five hours at Langley Park.
The carnival, now in its eighth year, will again be hosted in conjunction with Paydirt Media.
This ties in with the week-long Africa Down Under mining conference currently taking place in Perth.
The 2019 Africa Down Under Cup carnival will be bigger than ever with 120 players making up 12 teams. In total there will be 33 small-sided matches, across two groups, two semi-finals and a final.
There will also be a four-team women’s exhibition tournament.
A traditional African band will be providing entertainment, along with an interactive drum circle and other music, while food trucks will be on site for refreshments.
Football West CEO James Curtis said: “The Africa Down Under Cup is a great occasion, one of the most popular we put on.
“It is a chance to enjoy African culture and celebrate the diversity and inclusivity of our sport.
“I know a lot of the mining delegates at the conference look forward to coming down, so let’s hope the weather is kind and we get a good turnout.”
The 12 teams represented by local communities will be:
Group A: Mauritius, Togo, Liberia, Tanzania, Seychelles, Kenya
Group B: Zambia, Nigeria, Uganda, South Sudan, North Lake, Common Goal
The Africa Down Under Cup is one of many Football West initiatives that support people from CALD (Culturally and linguistically diverse) backgrounds.
It is also supported by Healthway WA’s Smarter than Smoking and HBF.
