Ashfield turn it around to beat Windmills

Report by Ryan Borrett

Ashfield SC came from behind to defeat Morley Windmills 2-1 at Wotton Reserve to maintain their position at the top of the State League Division One.

The league leaders had to bring their best to overcome second from bottom Morley, whose impressive start saw them take the lead in the 21st minute.

Windmills midfielder Boas Mtwale played a fine ball which split the Ashfield backline to find the run of David Berman, who placed a low finish under the diving Ashfield goal keeper Paul Rainford to make it 1-0.

But Ashfield responded quickly after conceding and equalised just five minutes later.

Captain Kevin Ashwood fired in a shot from distance that was well saved by Windmills keeper Aiden Holloway. However the ball fell straight into the path of Pat Quinn, who found himself in the right place at the right time and he scored inside the near post to bring Ashfield on level terms.

At half-time it looked like the game could go either way. However, Ashfield’s determination to cement top spot shone through as the second half wore on and led to them creating several good chances.

Substitute Joshua Kotio looked dangerous all game after coming on for the injured Paul McCormack and the winger hit the bar with a curling shot from the edge of the box.

The away side’s intensity was rewarded soon after when, in the 69th minute, right back Matt Worton pushed forward and wasn’t closed down by the Morley defence. Worton found enough space to unleash a powerful shot that flew in at the near post to make it 2-1.

Ashfield’s composure showed in the remaining minutes and Morley were unable to break down the visitors’ solid defence. This Round 11 win ensured Ashfield stay a point clear of Western Knights and Gwelup Croatia at the halfway point of the season, the chasing pair also winning on Saturday.

Ashfield face a tough test in their title push next week as they travel to fellow promotion contenders Knights. Things don’t get any easier for the Windmills as they face fourth-place Fremantle City away.
