Christiane Astorp scored twice for Balcatta in their 2-0 win over Stirling Panthers

Astorp double gives Balcatta win

Report by Edward Nixon

Christiane Astorp scored a double as Balcatta claimed a 2-0 win over Stirling Panthers in Round 10 of the Women’s Premier League at Grindleford Reserve on Sunday.

Astorp found the back of the net either side of half-time to help Balcatta to their third straight league win.

In a game which pitted fifth against sixth, it was Balcatta who controlled the early tempo as Astorp called Stirling goalkeeper Stacey Cavill into action with a fierce free-kick within the opening 10 minutes.

Astorp wouldn’t be denied for long, however, as the midfielder put her side on top with a cool finish just past the 20-minute mark.

The hosts continued to pepper Cavill’s goal for the remainder of the first-half as Caitlin Doeglas also went close with a thunderous strike.

Balcatta should have doubled their lead just seconds after the restart as Astorp ballooned a shot over from three yards out after some clever build-up play from forward Liana Cook.

Astorp would make amends seven minutes later as she tapped home Monique D’Opera’s cross from close range to give her side a 2-0 advantage.

Stirling have yet to taste victory in 2019 but refused to back down and almost pegged a goal back on the hour mark as Lauren Continibali’s strike cannoned off Gabby Dal Busco’s post.

With Stirling pushing for a way back into the contest, Balcatta went close to putting the result beyond doubt as Astorp shot wide in search of her hat-trick before Epril Nossent blazed over.

The missed opportunities wouldn’t prove costly, however, as Balcatta secured their third win in a row.
