Bayswater comeback stuns Cockburn

Report by Ryan Borrett

Bayswater City completed a brilliant second half comeback to send Cockburn City crashing out of the FFA Cup at Frank Drago Reserve.

Cockburn were leading 2-0 with under 25 minutes to play and on course for a place in the regional quarter-finals.

But Chris Coyne’s side, who themselves surrendered a two-goal advantage last week, turned the tie on its head with three goals in 12 minutes to book their passage into Round Six.

FFA CUP ROUND FIVE RESULTS

Substitute Hayden Stevens’ goal late in the first half had put Cockburn in front and when Daniel Robinson doubled his side’s lead with just over half an hour to play, the Cockerels were crowing.

But the tide started to turn when Bayswater were awarded a penalty in the 67th minute which Daryl Nicol converted. And two minutes later Nicol’s long-standing strike partner Gordon Smith conjured up an equaliser.

Bayswater suddenly had ther tails up and they completed a fabulous turnaround soon after when a cross into the box came off Cockburn defender Stevens and went into his own net.

Cockburn sent extra men forward in the dying minutes to try to salvage the result but Bayswater’s composure saw them through to the final whistle.

After a fairly quiet first half with few chances, Stevens came off the bench for the injured Euen Grant and gave the Cockerels the lead in the 43rd minute with a far post finish from David Araya’s corner.

Robinson made it 2-0 in the 59th minute after an excellent run through the middle. He found Ryan Pratt, who cut it back for Robinson to finish from close range.

Bayswater were in deep trouble and straight after Cockburn’s second goal they threw on Gustavo Marulanda to add a new dimension to their attack.

The fightback started when Kenny Keogh was brought down in the box in the 67th minute and the referee pointed to the spot. Nicol put away the penalty and two minutes later the scores were level as Smith found space in the box to score.

Bayswater suddenly had the momentum and the unlucky Stevens provided the home fans with the moment they were after when he diverted the ball into his own net.
