Belt Up Masters Cup Final: Hillarys resist Kingsley fightback

Report by Samuel Hays

Hillarys proved too good for Kingsley to take out the Belt Up Masters Cup Final with a 3-2 win at Macedonia Park.

This was the second year running that Kingsley have contested this match and they have now fallen short on both occasions.

It was a hotly contested opening period as Craig Storey got in behind but his shot was trapped between the legs of Hillarys keeper Lawrence Walsh.

Hillarys took the lead after 35 minutes through Anthony Jones and the same player almost made it two moments later but his shot hit the crossbar.

After the break, Cathal Quinn hit a rocket of a shot but it was straight at Walsh before Jonathan Byrne lobbed Kingsley keeper Kevan Towers to double Hillarys’ advantage after 70 minutes.

Kingsley thought they had scored through Luke Dove when he put the ball in the back of the net but it was ruled offside.

And they were made to pay when Dean Hall drove up the wing before finishing well past Towers to leave Kingsley with a daunting task ahead.

However, just as it looked too much for Kingsley they won a penalty after Robbie Fanning was pushed in the back and Allan Brady slotted the ball into the top corner.

Kingsley had another after 89 minutes when Dove got in behind and placed his shot to the right of Walsh, but it was too little too late as Hillarys were the ones left to celebrate.

Kingsley 2 (Brady 83min, Dove 89)
