Belt Up Over 45s Cup Final: United triumph on penalties

Report by Samuel Hays

Joondalup United inflicted Bayswater City’s first loss of the season in the Belt Up Over 45s Cup Final with a 6-5 penalty shoot-out triumph.

The match finished 1-1 after 90 minutes as Vas Kalaserakos gave Bayswater the lead just after 43 minutes before Ray Clarke levelled it up with seven minutes remaining.

It was all Bayswater early on as Kouresh Noorooz had a great chance to open the scoring but scuffed his shot at the last minute and Joondalup keeper Darren Looseley was forced to smother Paul Lincoln’s attempt.

But it was Joondalup who nearly took when some great work from Alan Croft ended with a powerful strike from Danny Middleton that looked destined for the top corner but it cannoned back off the crossbar.

Bayswater would take the lead just before the break when Noorooz played a great through ball to Kalaserakos who made no mistake with the finish.

Richie Casey continued to apply pressure to the Joondalup defence but his shot flew just wide before Trim Morgan forced two good saves from Looseley.

Joondalup thought they had levelled the match when Chris Holmes beat Bayswater keeper Lee Fletcher but Michael Casey came racing back and cleared the ball off the line.

However, Joondalup would level the match from the resulting corner as a thumping header from centre back Clarke sailed past Fletcher to send the match to penalties.

Holmes couldn’t get Joondalup off to a good start in the shootout as his effort was saved first up but Looseley saved from Richie Casey to level it up.

Karl Merrie and Nicky Dyer both hit the woodwork from their successive penalties before Noorooz had his effort saved, leaving Joondalup to lift the trophy.
