Downs get up at Joondalup

Report by Edward Nixon

Wembley Downs got their 2019 Belt Up Amateur Premier Division season off to a winning start, defeating newly-promoted Joondalup United 2-0 at Beldon Park on Sunday.

Stephen Geoghegan’s penalty and Zac Robinson’s looping header either side of half-time gave the visitors all three points in the first game of the season.

In blustery conditions, it was the hosts who started the brighter – forward Kyall Osbourne going close on a pair of occasions, while Ryan Williams also threatened.

BELT UP AMATEUR PREMIER RESULTS

As the game progressed, Wembley grew into the contest and almost found themselves in the lead as Jay McDonald’s header forced a point-blank save from Joondalup goalkeeper Luke Green just past the half-hour mark.

Wembley wouldn’t have to wait long to get off the mark for the new season, however, as Geoghegan coolly slotted home his spot kick after Liam Ryan was adjudged to have fouled Gary McCarthy inside the box.

The visitors continued to force the tempo after the break and found themselves 2-0 up when Robinson’s looping header found its way into net just over 10 minutes from time to seal the win for his side.

Wembley will now turn their focus towards next weekend when they host UWA Nedlands FC, while Joondalup travel to take on the Night Series winners Leeming Strikers, who crashed 6-0 at Jaguar FC on Sunday.
