Downs on the up thanks to quickfire double
Report by Samuel Hays
Wembley Downs remain in the running for a second place finish after a 2-0 victory over Belmont Villa at Butlers Reserve on Sunday.
Only four points separate second and fifth in the Belt Up Amateur Premier Division with results becoming increasingly telling as the season draws to a close.
Belmont showed some good attacking intent early on but Wembley were better able to control the game and looked the more likely to score.
Steven Geoghegon had three good strikes but wasn’t able to find the target while Dean Wall and William Ashleigh both had opportunities of their own.
Geoghegon instead made his impact with his corners, starting on 49 minutes when Juraj Galba headed home.
And four minutes later another Geoghegon corner was met at the back post before falling to Dylan Browne, who thumped the ball into the back of the net and handed Wembley the three points.
The win took Wembley to fourth, three points behind second-place Quinns.
Leaders Kingsley have a nine-point advantage with six matches remaining after they defeated UWA Nedlands 1-0.
