Female coach program to run again

Football West News

Football West is seeking expressions of interest for a program designed to boost the number of female coaches following the success of a similar initiative this year.

The Female Coach Pilot Mentor Program, which ran throughout the 2018 season, will also develop the skills of coaches already in place.

The program is to be repeated in 2019 and Football West is looking for both mentors and mentees. All of the mentees must be female, however mentors can be male or female.

This year we had nine mentors, including Football West ALDI MiniRoos Officer Lisa Manson, Beckenham Angel’s Women’s State Premier League Coach Greg Farrell, as well as coachers from Northern Redbacks, Gosnells and Subiaco working with 10 up and coming coaches.

Two workshops were held during the season, while the mentors and mentees stayed in touch to offer advice and feedback.

Football West Development Officer Annie Leyland said: “The mentor-mentee program provided a supportive environment for female coaches to develop their abilities.

“The program incorporated workshops focused on goal-setting and relationship building. Many existing coaches were able to mentor and share their experience with others by meeting through the season to discuss coaching methods and personal goals.”

Consultancy firm People Places Planet was involved throughout the program and its CEO Alan Beattie said: “We held a post-season feedback evening and the feedback from the participants was extremely positive.

“They were certainly highly encouraging for further programs and all were keen to stay involved, either to encourage people to attend or be a mentor again in future years.”
