UPDATE Jun 28: There were roars of approval around Perth Glory headquarters on Wednesday night although none came from the A-League premiers themselves.
Instead it was NPL WA clubs Bayswater City and Floreat Athena who were making the noise as they watched the FFA Cup Round of 32 draw unfold live at Glory’s Floreat base.
Because while Glory have hopes of winning the competition, the member federation players make no secret of what they are after – a road trip over east.
And that is exactly what they got. Bayswater will head to Brisbane to face NPL QLD’s Olympic FC for a game to be shown live on Fox Sports, while Floreat Athena will be away at Adelaide Olympic, of NPL SA.
“Fantastic,” Bayswater Vice-President Ori Colli said. “For the boys it’s a good reward but we’ve got a game to win.”
Evans said: “I think the boys are pretty ecstatic to get an away trip and there’s time for bit of team bonding. Like Ori said you want to go over, you want to get the right result.”
Before their respective FFA Cup ties the two teams will meet in the Belt Up Cup Final on July 20.
“They gave us a good touch up on the weekend,” Evans said of last Saturday’s NPL game which Bayswater won 4-1.
Glory begin their FFA Cup campaign with a home tie against coach Tony Popovic’s old club Western Sydney Wanderers.
Bayswater’s tie against Olympic will be televised live on Fox Sports on Wednesday, July 24. Floreat’s game against Adelaide Olympic is on the same night.
Glory’s home clash with WSW is on Wednesday, August 7.
