The players attended a shirt presentation at the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries on Monday night.

Gold Fields Unit Manager: Stakeholder Relations Eddie Sheppard handed out the shirts while Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, WA State Office State Director Kate Longhurst addressed the audience.

The cultural exchange trip follows a similar one made by the Persebaya U19 team to Western Australia 12 months ago, which was an unqualified success.

Football West CEO James Curtis said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for Football West to further develop our partnership following Persebaya Surabaya’s youth team visit to Perth last year.

“As a near neighbour to Western Australia, it makes sense for Football West to engage with such a passionate footballing club in Persebaya to work on further exchanges. Football West, through our Asian Engagement Strategy, is leading the way in creating football opportunities within the region and this is another great step forward.”

The tour will be a celebration of sport, tourism and culture and is one of many undertaken by the Gold Fields WA State teams to Asia.

The Persebaya club have a massive social media following, including 1.1 million Instagram followers, which means great exposure for the WA side. The players will watch Persebaya take on neighbours TIRA-Persikabo in a Liga 1 derby.

Football West Head of Development Jamie Harnwell said: “The WA Gold Fields Under 19 State Team are eagerly looking forward to the trip. The opportunity to play some high quality games, attend a Persebaya home match as well as undertake a number of sightseeing and cultural trips is one that all of the players and staff are excited about.”

Brad Hassell, who will coach the side, said: “The players and coaching staff are hopin to give a strong account of ourselves in the games against Persebaya. We know from the visit last year that Persebaya have a very strong youth academy system with talented players and it will be a good test for our lads.”

The province of East Java has been a sister state to WA for almost 30 years.
