Gold Fields State U19s draw final match

The Gold Fields State Under 19s completed their three-match exchange tour of Surabaya with a deserved 1-1 draw against the Persebaya Under 18s on Wednesday.

Captain Hamish Van Dieken scored the WA side’s second-half equaliser, bravely heading in Jake Melia’s left-foot free-kick.

The result ensured the Gold Fields side finished their three-match exchange tour with a win, a loss and a draw.

It was another strong display from the visitors, whose defeat in the opening game last Saturday has been followed up with Monday’s victory over the Persebaya Under 20s and this draw.

Coach Brad Hassell praised the way his players stayed patient on Wednesday despite going a goal behind.

He said: “Again, another tough opposiion, a very similar game to Monday but this time we went a goal down and we had to claw our way back in the second half. I think 1-1 is a fair result.

“They are given their instructions and they are following it up to a ‘T’. If every player does that the game plan is a lot stronger and that’s what we’ve found in the last two matches.”

Assistant coach John Walmsley said: “Each game they have improved, especially today after going a goal behind. They showed a lot of character and determination.

“We spoke at half time that football is all about moments and luckily they got that moment in the second half. A great free-kick and a great finish. After that we finished the game strongly.”

Reflecting on the trip overall, Hassell said: “Credit to the boys, it’s been a tiring week for them. The games have been well contested and Persebaya have looked after us really well. The boys have been busy, not a lot of down time, but culturally it’s been great.”

Today’s match was attended by the Australian Consul-General for Surabaya Chris Barnes, who tossed the coin, the owner of the Persebaya Surabaya football club Azril Ananda, Football West CEO James Curtis and Football West Head of Development Jamie Harnwell.

On Tuesday the WA party were guests of the Consul-General at his office.
