Gosnells school Murdoch Uni in play-off semi first leg

Football West News

Gosnells City gave their hopes of going up a huge boost after winning 3-1 away at Murdoch University Melville in the first leg of their State League Promotion Semi-Final.

The visitors won both league encounters earlier in the season and their confidence was on display in the opening exchanges, often looking to disrupt Murdoch’s possession brand of football.

Their intensity was rewarded after 25 minutes when a Gosnells corner kick was prodded home by Wade Farmer after Murdoch had struggled to deal with the set-piece.

The hosts answered two minutes later when Adrian Ciampini finished off a fine passing move, the winger’s strike finding the bottom corner to put Murdoch level.

Ciampini nearly scored a second goal moments later but Tom Allen saved well to deny Murdoch’s No.7 a first half brace.

The pendulum swung back in favour of the visitors when they were awarded a penalty before half-time following Grant Mowatt’s handball inside the penalty area. Edward Wynne-Wilson made no mistake from the spot to put Gosnells back in the driver’s seat.

Murdoch came out of the break more assured in possession and often looked for their wide players to create chances, while Gosnells seemed content to threaten on the counter. Allen’s solid distribution coupled with a supportive wind meant MUM’s defenders had to be wary whenever their attacking moves broke down.

Clear-cut chances came at a premium in the second half. Feisal Zaw nearly made it 3-1 after he drifted into a central area to meet a cross, but Alec Radonich was out quickly to smother the goalbound strike.

While the hosts were pushing for a late equaliser, their defence was caught napping as Gosnells broke down the left wing. Captain Scott Pereira and Zaw were both brought down in the area, making the penalty decision a formality.

Wynne-Wilson once again stepped up for the visitors and sent Radonich the wrong way to give City a vital third away goal. Gosnells will now be favourites to make the promotion final when they host Murdoch at Walter Padbury Reserve on Wednesday night at 7pm.
