An inspired second-half performance from Gwelup Croatia’s midfield talisman Ellis Healing saw the home side run out 3-1 winners against Olympic Kingsway on Saturday afternoon at the Croatian Sporting Complex.
The game was played amid wild weather conditions as high winds and pouring rain threatened to dampen the contest as the sides headed into half-time goalless.
Earlier, Gwelup captain James Sammut had to be stretchered off after suffering a suspected broken leg early on in the contest after a heavy collision.
Kingsway then had a golden chance to take an early lead midway through the first-half but were denied by a stunning double save from Gwelup goalkeeper Riley Stephenson.
After the break, Gwelup came out revived and began to take charge of the contest. Healing began his second-half masterclass with a well-struck free kick that took a slight deflection as it curled into the top-left corner and beyond Kingsway goalkeeper Duncan Lennon Black. Former Kingsway star Danny Hodgson was then brought down in the box for Gwelup and Healing stepped up to convert the resulting penalty with conviction, lashing the ball into the top-left corner of the net.
Kingsway would pull one back through Elliot Tattersall who slammed the ball home from close range to offer his side a glimmer of hope heading into the final minutes of the match. This hope was then snuffed out just minutes later as Healing turned provider to set-up Gwelup striker David Heagney, who finished strongly to secure all three points for his side.
