Joondalup City take home Metro Cup

Report by Bobby Stamatoski

Joondalup City have claimed a 3-1 victory over North Perth United in a tight contest at E&D Litis Stadium to win the Metropolitan Cup champions title today.

Joondalup coach Jonny Andrews was pleased with how his team responded in the second half.

“I think today we set up not to concede, one man up front, we sort of knew that,” he said.

“We thought it was just a matter of time and eventually it came. North Perth got the penalty and made it a bit tough, but then the third goal came and we were home and dry.

“It’s a nice league and cup double so I’m pleased for the lads.”

Alex Corner’s strong performance gave the champions the edge in the second half, after the scores were tied 0-0 at the break.

Mark Thornton had the chance to put Joondalup ahead as early as the 3rd minute, but his effort cannoned off the post.

North Perth’s best chance came in the 25th minute when Sammy Kelly was put through on goal, but his chip was cleared off the line by the goalkeeper.

Thornton made a good run through the middle three minutes before the break, setting up Fredericks nicely, but an offside call ruled out the goal.

The second half saw plenty, as Joondalup City finally managed to take the lead through Fredericks. Jacob Di Bartolomeo skipped past his defender to put it on a plate for Fredericks to make it 1-0.

Arguably the man of the match, Corner made it 2-0 with a sensational effort from just outside the box that cannoned in off the cross-bar.

North Perth fought back and scored a penalty through Kerrie O’Mahoney 15 minutes from time.

Fans were anticipating a late come back from North Perth, but Corner scored a brilliant double to kill the game off four minutes from time.

North Perth coach Ryan Corp saw plenty of positives despite the loss.

“I believed we played well,” he said.

“We took a while to get going. We won our league below, they won theirs above.

“They played a lot better than us all round and seemed to be a bit more organised. They scored the first one, a scrappy one in the box. The second one was a screamer that put us on the back foot.

“We got a penalty back and went three at the back but the last one buried us.”
