Carramar FC Under 13s are the latest team to benefit from Football West’s Kicking Off Healthy Clubs program.
The Healthway initiative rewards clubs who provide a healthy platform for players, officials and spectators with a $750 gift voucher for Evolution Sports.
Team manager Mari Parkinson contacted Football West to explain the steps taken by the Smarter than Smoking Division One side.
“This was the first season that this particular group of players were going to play on a full-sized pitch. That meant extra training sessions with our coach Steve Robertson to make sure they were fit enough to cope with the demands,” she said.
“We saw the Kicking Off Healthy Clubs posts last year encouraging clubs to be more healthy so we thought we’d incorporate it into our extra training. We have always had an oranges roster for parents but we’ve been reinfocing the message to the boys about drinking enough water to stay hydrated and eating the right foods before games.
“Steve is also big on the boys stretching properly. Recovery is obviously as important as any other aspect of training.”
Mari added: “The Kicking Off Healthy Clubs program is a great idea. We all want to do the right thing anyway so to be able to get football equipment is fantastic.
“And the boys had a real laugh when we took some photos at training. I think we’ve got a few proper posers in the team.”
Perth Glory Women striker Leticia McKenna is the Kicking Off Healthy Club ambassador.
“The Smarter than Smoking Kicking Off Healthy Clubs program is a great way for clubs to offer a healthier option,” said Leticia, who represented Football West at the NTC Challenge in Canberra in July.
“It is great for young people to be active and healthy.
“My tips for young sports people keen to know more about being healthy are: drink plenty of water; eat healthily and cut down on the chips and fizzy drinks; and get plenty of rest.”
