Kingsley run riot with stunning late show

Report by Samuel Hays

Kingsley have one hand on the Belt Up Amateur Premier Division trophy after a resounding 6-0 win over Wembley Downs at Butlers Reserve on Sunday.

Lee Thomas opened the scoring in the first half for Kingsley but the game was still alive until the final 14 minutes when Kingsley incredibly ran in five more goals to blow away the home side. Jayden Drummond nabbed a double with Joel Gillespie, Sean Johnson and Lewis Flatt chipping in with a goal each.

With three matches of the season left, Kingsley remain six points clear of Quinns who kept their title hopes alive by defeating Hamersley Rovers 5-1.

It looked early on like the soggy pitch might make it hard for the players but Kingsley opened the scoring on 25 minutes when Simone Sichel put in a great cross which Thomas headed home.

Wembley’s Juraj Galba had a great chance to level when he found space in the box but he skied his shot over the bar.

Wembley made a great start to the second half as Galba went one-on-one with Kingsley keeper Ryan Moss, who made himself big to pull off a good save. From the corner David Prescott did well to get his header on target but it was straight at Moss.

As the match wore on it looked increasingly like Wembley might find an equaliser – Dylan Browne shot just wide and Galba was unable to find the target with another good opportunity.

But Kingsley showed why they are leading the league when Drummond found himself in behind the defence and beat keeper Jeffery Cornez at his near post.

Drummond was at it again four minutes later as he poked home after a scramble in the box.

The one-way traffic continued. Gillespie took a lovely touch to control the ball and had the finish to match as he beat Cornez.

It was 5-0 when returning striker Johnson slid his shot into the back of the net and Flatt rounded out the scoring in added time as his deflected shot sailed past Cornez.
