La Monte hat-trick as Queens Park beat NTC 5-1

Report by Edward Nixon

A round after suffering their first league loss since 2017, Queens Park returned to winning ways by defeating Hyundai NTC 5-1 in Round Six of the Women’s Premier League at Coker Park on Sunday.

Ellie La Monte scored a hat-trick while Emily Henderson and Shannon May also got their names on the scoresheet as Queens Park bounced back from their shock 3-2 loss to Fremantle City in perfect fashion.

In a contest between the league’s top two teams, it was Queens Park who started the brighter – forward Henderson going close within the opening five minutes.

Separated by just goal difference on the ladder, NTC were always going to present Queens Park with a difficult game and the visitors were close to taking the lead when Leticia McKenna’s well-struck free-kick cannoned off the bar.

Having soaked up some defensive pressure, it was Queens Park who struck first, however, as Henderson found a way past Shirani Battaglia after the NTC goalkeeper had previously kept out efforts from Sadie Lawrence and Lexie Moreno.

The goal lifted Queens Park and they extended their lead just two minutes later as La Monte grabbed her first. However McKenna then pulled a goal back for NTC on the stroke of half-time.

Queens Park coach Peter Rakic’s half-time team talk had the desired effect as La Monte scored her second and third of the game to reclaim the hosts’ two-goal cushion within four minutes of the restart.

Playing with confidence, May added a late insurance goal to make sure of the points to extend Queens Park’s lead at the top of the ladder.
