Redbacks provide late sting to stun NTC

Report by Edward Nixon

Sarah Carroll scored a hat-trick as the Northern Redbacks came from behind to defeat Hyundai NTC Women 4-3 and remain top of the Women’s Premier League ladder.

Trailing 3-2 with 12 minutes to play, Carroll netted her second and third goals of the game to help the Redbacks complete a stunning comeback and secure their fifth win in their last six games.

RESULTS

Redbacks took the lead at Celebration Park after 16 minutes when Carroll volleyed home Katie Moth’s cross.

The hosts almost doubled their advantage seven minutes later, but NTC goalkeeper Alix Davies did well to deny Larissa Walsh when she was one-on-one.

The missed opportunity allowed NTC to draw level just before the half-hour mark as Jayna Ridley set up midfielder Leticia McKenna, who steered her shot past Morgan Aquino.

Tied at 1-1 at half-time, the Redbacks jumped out of the gates to start the second term as Walsh shot wide 30 seconds after the restart.

Despite dominating possession, the Redbacks were stunned on the counter as supersub Ella Lincoln gave NTC the lead against the run of play just two minutes after coming off the bench.

The Redbacks weren’t behind for long, however, as Kim Carroll nestled her free-kick into the back of the net two minutes later in a back-and-forth contest.

Ridley restored NTC’s lead with a well-timed strike 19 minutes from time before Sarah Carroll took charge of the game – scoring two goals in the final 12 minutes to hand the Redbacks a come-from-behind win.
