A final game defeat cost the Gold Fields State Under 14s top spot in their group by the narrowest of margins at the National Youth Championships for Boys.
However they are still in the hunt to finish as the top team at the Coffs Harbour tournament.
The Football West side made it four wins from four on Wednesday morning with a resounding 4-1 victory over Queensland Metro, the goals coming from Orhan Boric (Perth SC), Lachlan Byrne (Murdoch University Melville), Ethan Banks (Sorrento) and Toby Snook (ECU Joondalup).
Unfortunately the West Aussies dropped their first points of the week in the afternoon, losing 3-2 to Victoria Country despite goals from Sameer Hourani (Ellenbrook United) and Banks.
That final game loss saw the Gold Fields U14s slip to second spot in their final group table, behind Newcastle Jets by a single goal after the two teams finished on 12 points.
They now move into the second phase of the tournament with games against the winners of the two other 14s groups – Victoria Metro White and Victoria Metro Blue. That will decide the top Member Federation side who, in turn, will face the best 2 Star Academy from the Jets, Brisbane Roar and Perth Glory on Friday.
The Gold Fields State Under 13s finished the group stage on four points after two 2-1 defeats on Wednesday, going down to Victoria Country and Queensland Metro.
They will take on Queensland Country on Thursday and Northern NSW on Friday.
