North Perth United stay top

Report by Edward Nixon

North Perth United held off a courageous Joondalup United to maintain their unbeaten start to the Belt Up Amateur Premier Division season with a 2-1 win at Beldon Park on Sunday.

Having taken a 2-0 lead thanks to strikes from Edin Nalic and Eamonn Kelly, North Perth were forced to sweat out the final few minutes as Joondalup pulled back a late goal through Dre Boulinekis.

With the win, North Perth stay top by two points from Kingsley SC.

Fresh from a 2-0 win over Jaguar FC last weekend, North Perth wasted no time getting on the scoresheet as Nalic steered his shot past Joondalup goalkeeper Luke Green after just eight minutes.

Keen to bounce back from a 9-3 loss to Kingsley, Joondalup controlled possession well but failed to trouble Jamie Serra’s goal during a cagey opening half.

That all changed after the break as both sides jumped out of the blocks.

Curtis Wreglesworth going close for the hosts. It was the visitors who would extend their lead, however, as North Perth captain Kelly beat the offside trap before tucking home just past the hour mark.

Pushing bodies forward in search of a goal, Joondalup set up a grandstand finish when Boulinkenis found the back of the net seven minutes from time.

The comeback was too little too late for Ben Williams’ side, however, as North Perth held on to claim all three points.
