Queens Park beat Fremantle to reach Top Four final

Report by Kelechi Osunwa

Queens Park booked a place in the Women’s Top 4 Cup Final with a 2-1 win over a young and spirited Fremantle City side at Coker Park.

Queens Park took the lead after 10 minutes when Emily Henderson caught Jamie Lee Gale’s cross flush on the volley as the two wingers combined beautifully.

Fremantle gained a foothold into the game through Laura Waltman and Ash Santich patrolling the middle of the park and with Emma Carbon and Annabelle Leek up front and in the channels.

Carbon almost equalised for the visitors when the winger cut in from the left and blasted an effort that keeper Bec Bennett parried on to the bar.

Queens Park then doubled their lead when they punished Fremantle for a lack of concentration in the penalty area.

Katarina Jukic took possession with the Fremantle players thinking the ball had run out of play. Unfortunately for them it hadn’t and the striker squared for Shannon May, who calmly played in Gale to place her effort into the bottom corner.

Fremantle started the second half the brighter and pulled one back when Evie Marchetti reacted first to a Bennett save to score into an empty net.

As Fremantle pushed forward for an equaliser Queens Park countered and had two gilt-edged chances to seal the game, but Jamie Duncanson’s near post slide went narrowly wide and Gale missed from six yards out when one on one with Kaylin Gellhoed.

Fremantle had a final flurry. Mikayla Lyons’ deflected free-kick looped over the bar and that was followed by a booming effort from Leek, but the home side were able to cling on.

The win means Queens Park get the opportunity to make amends for their loss in last year’s final when they went down on penalties to Balcatta.

And they could yet face Balcatta again as they meet league champions Northern Redbacks at Grindleford Reserve in the other semi-final on Sunday (3pm kick-off).
