Queens Park beat Redbacks 2-1

Report by Edward Nixon

It was far from straight forward but Queens Park held off Northern Redbacks to remain top of the Women’s Premier Division following a tense 2-1 win at Coker Park on Sunday.

Queens Park found the back of the net either side of half-time through Ellie La Monte and Lexie Moreno. And despite Sarah Carroll pulling a goal back from the spot for Redbacks, last year’s title winners were able to hold on for a valuable three points.

The result means there is now a six-point gap between the sides, while Fremantle City have moved into second after they won 1-0 at Balcatta.

In wet and windy conditions, it was the visiting Redbacks who registered the first effort on goal with Sophia Neal forcing Queens Park goalkeeper Bec Bennett into some early action.

Winners of their last two games coming into this contest, Queens Park soon settled into the game and started to pepper Morgan Aquino’s goal as Shannon May, La Monte and Katrina Jukic all went close.

Queens Park weren’t to be denied for long, however, and La Monte broke the deadlock six minutes before the break when she hammered her right-footed shot past Aquino.

The hosts took that momentum into the second-half as they needed just four minutes to double their advantage – Moreno nodding in Tia Stonehill’s perfectly-weighted cross from the right flank.

A two-goal lead is always dangerous in football and Redbacks soon found themselves back in the contest when referee Paul Mills awarded them a spot-kick after a handball from Jaymee Gibbons.

After scoring four goals in last weekend’s 13-0 win over the Stirling Panthers, Carroll dispatched the penalty to make it a 2-1 game.

Redbacks should have found themselves level just after the hour-mark but Neal pushed her shot wide with just the keeper to beat.

Throwing numbers forward in hopes of an equaliser, Carroll had one final opportunity to salvage a point but dragged her 90th minute effort wide as Queens Park held on.
