Football West News

Football West will kick off three Walking Football hubs next week to help more people get out and get active.

The weekly social classes are aimed at men and women aged 50+ who are keen to try football for the first time or who have previously hung up the boots.

The hubs will run for about 12 weeks, starting at Autumn Park, Rockingham, on Monday, September 23.

This will be followed by hubs at Fox Fives, Floreat, and Iluka Sports Complex, Joondalup, both from October 9

Football West Community Football Manager Sarah Du Plessis said the health benefits from partaking in Walking Football were widespread.

“This program is fantastic for people who want to get out and have a go. Walking Football is huge in the UK, where is began, and it is growing right across Australia,” she said.

“There have been plenty of studies which show that people in the age demographic we are targeting who stay active and have a strong social lifestyle enjoy improved mental and physical wellbeing.

“This is an inclusive, accessible program, so it is for people who may have never played soccer before or it could be for those who have walked away from the game for whatever reason and want to start up again.

“People can come along on their own or with friends and they’ll be put into teams. It’s all about having a kick, staying active and meeting new people. These are small-sided games and there will be skill coaching to give people a few tips.”

“We plan to hold a competition later in the year but these hubs are more about the social aspect, bringing people together to enjoy the sport,” Ms Du Plessis said.

Football West’s Walking Football program is funded through the Federal Government.
