Sizzling Swan have Windmills in a spin

Report by Peter Simcox

Swan United have one foot in the Inter-Divisional Promotion Play-off Final after a comprehensive 4-0 win in the first leg of the Semi-Final against Morley Windmills.

The Black and Whites dominated the first half with goals from Brian Patterson, David Foster and a John Monterosso penalty. Patterson added his second after the break to make it four, the result leaving Morley hanging on to their Division One status by a thread.

It was a lively start to the game with chances at both ends. First on six minutes Boas Mtwale stung the palms of Swan keeper Joey Smith, before Liam Merigan’s volley from the edge of the penalty area flashed inches wide of the target as United responded.

On 15 minutes it was the home side who opened the scoring. Merigan slipped the ball in neatly to Patterson, who brought the ball down well and finished clinically past Aiden Holloway.

It was 2-0 eight minutes later and it was a goal of great quality. Lucas Allender found Patterson, who played in Patterson down the left. The former Forrestfield United playmaker whipped in a great low cross and Foster lost his marker and guided the ball home.

The visitors were shocked and things got worse on 36 minutes when referee Alexander Best spotted a push by Igor Novakovic on Brennan Borzecki and pointed to the spot, much to the displeasure of the Morley players. Monterosso stepped and sent Holloway the wrong way to make it 3-0 at the break.

Swan’s dominance continued after the break and they had two early goals disallowed after the break – Monterosso and Foster both hit the back of the net but the assistant’s flag was up for offside. Then on the hour Foster was sent clear by Merigan and his lob bounced off the crossbar before being claimed by the grateful Holloway.

The home side’s pressure was finally rewarded on 69 minutes when they added a fourth. Patterson’s free-kick from wide on the left beat everyone in the box, including keeper Holloway, and nestled in the goal to the delight of the big home crowd.

Morley needed to find a goal to take into the second leg to give them some hope and Debaba Mtwale fired inches wide, before Swan keeper Smith was out bravely to save at the feet of Dion Berman moments later.

But the visitors couldn’t find one and they will need a huge turnaround in the second leg at Wotton Reserve on Wednesday evening if they are to stay in Division One.
