Club Skill Acquisition Programs (SAP)

Club based Skill Acquisition Programs (SAP) are a great way for clubs to support their players development through extra weekly sessions and out of season programs.

The SAP phase focuses on the crucial age groups of U9-U12, which is the most decisive age group for acquiring the appropriate technical foundation (the ‘Golden Age’ of motor learning).

Training sessions in the SAP phase focus upon developing the four core skills of:

  1. Striking the ball

This includes all forms of striking the ball such as short/long passing, shooting and crossing

  2. First Touch

Controlling the ball with all allowed body parts

  3. 1v1

All moves, feints and accelerations to get past and away from an opponent

  4. Running with the ball

At speed (with a lot of space) or ‘dribbling’ (in tight areas), this includes techniques for protecting the ball and changing direction

A number of Junior NPL Clubs have successfully implemented the program within their clubs. As part of the NPL Review it will be a requirement that all Junior NPL Clubs implement Club Skill Acquistion Programs by 2019.

The benefits of running a Club SAP are…

  • Investing in the ‘long-term’ development of players at your club.

  • The SAP Trainers will get the experience of working with advanced playing groups, providing a challenging environment for players to accelerate their development.

  • Your club will be seen as a pro-active club who values junior development. This then becomes an attraction to those players/parents seeking to find a new club and will also aid in the retention of more players within your club, as parents won’t feel the need to seek out private providers.

  • Clubs can continue with the Program through the summer in order to achieve the long-term aim of ‘year-round football’.

  • Clubs with SAP programs can arrange friendly fixtures with other SAP Clubs to increase the amount of game time for their players. This is highly recommended during the out of season months.
