Suttie sweeps Phoenix to top spot

South West Phoenix are the new leaders of the Women’s State League Division One following their 4-2 win over ECU Joondalup.

Nicole Suttie scored a hat-trick to make it 11 goals in six matches and send the Bunbury side to the summit.

Ava Richards scored Phoenix’s other goal, while ECU’s goals came from Danielle Maton and in-form Frankie Murray.

Previous frontrunners Sorrento suffered their first defeat, going down 2-1 at UWA Nedlands.

An own goal in only the second minute from UWA captain Cass Greenwell gave Sorrento a flying start.

But Rebecca Saccoccio equalised a minute into the second half. Then Rebecca Salsano hit the winner as UWA went above the Gulls and into second.

Rachel McCaffrey and Linda Carnessali scored either side of half-time to give Perth AFC a 2-0 win over Mandurah City, Armadale and Port Kennedy drew 0-0, while two-goal Heben Michaele inspired Balga to a 3-1 victory at Gosnells City. Balga’s other goal came from Bintu Colley. Leah Huria scored for Gosnells.


In the Women’s Amateur League, Fremantle City and Northern Redbacks are a point ahead of Curtin University following Round Six.

Fremantle, top on goal difference, won 5-1 at UWA Nedlands. Alice Vandermeiren scored four.

In a tighter encounter, Redbacks came from a goal down to edge out Curtin 2-1. Tiahna Atkins scored the winner 15 minutes from the end.

Balga missed out on gaining their first point of the season, losing 1-0 at home to Subiaco. The only goal was a 23rd minute penalty scored by Emma Morgan.
