Three is the Mujic number

Report by Navrin Secker

Ago Mujic fired a hat-trick as North Perth United took over top spot in the Belt Up Amateur Premier Division with a 6-1 thrashing of Quinns on Friday night.

Niall Murray, Sean Lahert and Oscar Kelly joined Mujic on the scoresheet for North Perth at Gumblossom Reserve, while Wayne Carter’s 78th minute strike was the lone goal for the hosts.

Quinns came into the Round Seven fixture on the back of a 6-0 thumping at the hands of Kingsley and would have wanted to bounce back on their own patch.

ROUND SEVEN FIXTURES

But North Perth centre-back Murray stunned the home side with a beautiful free-kick past Quinns keeper Luke Westneat just four minutes into the match.

Edin Nalic then had the North Perth fans on their feet as he nutmegged two players while running down the right wing, but the eventual effort from Patrick Montgomery was below par.

A poor challenge by Leyton Stanley-Hunt gave North Perth another free-kick in a dangerous area and this time Mujic found the back of the net with a curling effort around the wall.

Lahert was next to get in on the act, scoring late in the half with a great strike into the top corner from very long range.

Any hopes of a comeback from Quinn were dashed less than a minute into the second half when Stanley-Hunt received a second yellow. And to rub salt in the wounds, Mujic scored his second goal from the resulting set-piece handing North Perth a four-goal advantage.

Westneat’s lack of height in goal was once again exposed, this time by Kelly whose curler from ridiculous range sneaked in under the crossbar.

Despite being a man down, Quinns looked stronger in the last half-hour and could have got a goal back when Mark Sandor Kolts’ cross found Ross Kirragt, but his shot failed to trouble North Perth keeper Jamie Serra.

The hosts eventually got on the scoresheet when Serra spilt the ball in the box and despite making a great save to deny the initial effort from Carter he could not stop the substitute’s follow-up.

David Long’s poor challenge on Kelly handed the visitors a penalty, which Mujic tucked away to complete his hat-trick and round out a resounding North Perth win.

Kingsley will reclaim top spot should they defeat Kwinana United at Chichester Park on Saturday night (kick off 6.30pm).
