Two-goal Tops stars for UWA

Report by Samuel Hays

A stirring fightback from UWA Nedlands, led by Tops Olasanoye, ensured Sunday’s clash with North Perth United finished 2-2  at Woodville Reserve.

The Belt Up Amateur Premier League encounter started as expected as favourites North Perth held a two-goal advantage at the break courtesy of goals from Oscar Kelly and Alpha Sherif.

RESULTS

The second half saw North Perth duo Sam Nicol and coach Alex Carter shown red cards while Olasanoye was rewarded for his tireless work rate with a double.

The result means North Perth lose top spot to Kingsley after they had a 6-0 win over Quinns on Saturday night. UWA remain mid-table.

It didn’t take long for the first goal to come when after 22 minutes Kelly finally put the ball in the back of the net after shots from Dan Conway and Sherif had been saved.

And North Perth had doubled their advantage 10 minutes later when Sherif tapped home a square ball from Kelly after UWA keeper Duncan Lissiman came out and failed to collect the ball, leaving UWA furiously calling for a foul.

However, it was a different story after the break as North Perth allowed UWA to apply pressure and gain a foothold in the match.

UWA were rewarded in the 56th minute when Olasanoye got on the end of a through ball and rounded North Perth keeper Jamie Serra before finishing well from a tight angle.

Four minutes later Nicol was given his marching orders when, as the last defender, he purposely clipped the ankles of M Barrington who was denied a clear goalscoring opportunity.

The red card allowed UWA more space going forward and they equalised in the 64th minute when the North Perth defence failed to clear the ball and Olasanoye was in the right place at the right time to smash home.

Tensions then began to boil over as Carter was sent to the clubrooms after an altercation with Olasanoye and multiple yellows were handed out.

UWA looked the more likely to find a winner as they continued to create space behind the North Perth defence but they couldn’t find the end product, leaving both teams to settle for a draw.
