Wembley set the pace against Jaguar

Report by Ryan Borrett

Wembley Downs put together an impressive performance, scoring three goals from set-pieces to defeat Jaguar FC 3-1 on Sunday in Round 11 of the Belt Up Amateur Premier division.

Both sides came into the clash level on points, with Wembley in fifth place and Jaguar in third.

It was Wembley who handled the pressure the better, scoring two unanswered goals in the first half and adding a third just after the break.

The Jaguars got one goal back in the 73rd minute after Ibraham Hamad converted from the penalty spot but Wembley held off the away side’s late advances to seal the win.

After a fast-paced start with both sides having several chances to go ahead it was Wembley who netted the first of the match in the 33rd minute through striker Steven Geoghegon.

A Wembley corner wasn’t cleared and the ball fell into the path of Geoghegon who wasted no time to fire a shot in through the pack and into the back of the net to make it 1-0.

Wembley’s second goal came in the 43rd minute from another set-piece after Paddy Besley’s free-kick found the unmarked Ben Noble at the far post and he headed home.

The Jaguars failed to capitalise on their early chances in the match and their struggles were made worse just after half-time as Wembley scored their third in the 47th minute.

Geoghegon’s free-kick picked out Jay McDonald who headed it down to Juraj Galba to finish from close range to make it 3-0.

Wembley’s backline were very solid throughout the match and they proved too strong against the Jaguar FC’s attempts to claw their way back into the match in the second half.

The away side did get a glimmer of hope in the 73rd minute after receiving a penalty from a Wembley hand ball. Hamad stepped up and coolly slotted the spot-kick past the diving Wembley keeper Jeff Cornez and into the bottom left-hand corner.

However Jaguar’s chance of a late comeback were quashed in the 85th minute when Paul Sopp was shown a red card by referee David Bruce for a late foul.

Wembley face second-from-bottom Joondalup United next week and will hope they can make it three wins in a row, while Jaguar FC face another tough test as they travel to Leeming Strikers.
