Football West’s new Women’s Masters is proving a big success with 130 players participating each week.
The over-30 competition, which takes place at Celebration Park in Balga, kicked off last Wednesday and has 11 teams signed up.
Women from across the metro area are involved, including from Stirling, Bassendean, Ashfield, Sorento, Wanneroo, Subiaco, Warwick and Joondalup, many of whom are playing for the first time.
Teams are competing to be crowned maiden Women’s Masters league champions.
Football West Women’s Development Officer Annie Leyland said an aim of the Women’s Masters was to break down barriers for participation.
“This provides further opportunities for women to engage with football by creating an enjoyable, social, inclusive environment for all women over 30 to come and play,” she said.
“Many people who have never played the game before have come to participate.”
Leyland said there was an intention to expand the pilot program, with a long-term plan to incorporate more teams and have a north and south competition and playoffs.
“With enough interest the Women’s Masters could become a competition within the regular football season,” she added.
