Young gun Connor set to fire for Pararoos

Football West News

The Pararoos head to Europe this week to take part in the IFCPF* World Cup with the youngest player in the squad turning 16 when he is overseas.

Yet despite his tender years, West Australian Connor Bunce is up for the challenge of helping the Australian side make an impact in Seville, Spain.

“I’m looking forward to it, very excited. Our first game in the tournament is against Ukraine, who are the No.1 side, so that should be good,” said Connor, a left-sided midfielder who plays for Stirling Rangers in the Albany Junior Soccer Association.

Pushed on his strengths, Connor, who turns 16 on July 3, said: “I have a strong left leg and I’m good at dribbling past players and can see a quick through ball.”

Connor’s father Justin said: “We will get up for three in the morning and watch the live streaming.”

And he will not be the only one in the Great Southern setting his alarm, with some of Connor’s Year 10 classmates ready to cheer on from afar.

“Connor is at Bethel Christian School and they are all very happy for him and supportive and they’ve said they will see if they can watch it too. It’s good fun,” Justin added.

“We are very thankful for the opportunity. I grew up in the north-west in the 60s and there were no such things as football fields with grass!”

There are three West Australians in coach Kai Lammert’s 14-player squad – Connor, Alessandro La Verghetta and Brad Scott.

The team will play two international friendlies against Germany’s National CP (Cerebral Palsy) side in Oberhaching near Munich on July 2 and 3 (WA time) before heading to the World Cup.

Fourteen players have been chosen to represent the Pararoos

Their first group match against Ukraine is on Sunday, July 7 followed by Argentina and hosts Spain.

Lammert said: “Our preparation for this year’s IFCPF World Cup has been thorough with the team having had three camps at Football New South Wales’ headquarters in Glenwood in the build up to the tournament,.

“The time that we will have in Oberhaching will help us fine tune our plans leading up to the tournament, and the games that we will play against Germany, who are also bound for the World Cup, will offer fantastic preparation.

“The 14 players that have been selected for this year’s World Cup have all overcome obstacles in their lives to earn selection in this squad, so it is a special moment for all of the boys that have been picked and they are ready to represent Australia with passion and pride,” he said.

The 2019 IFCPF World Cup will be held between July 4-20.
