All-female first for NPLWA

Football West celebrated a first on Wednesday night when we had an all-female line-up of officials for an NPL match.

Originally scheduled for Sunday, 9 Augutst, the rescheduled NPLWA Women’s fixture between Balcatta and Fremantle City saw Jess Byrd as referee and Caleigh Ormerod and Libby Caldwell as the assistant referees.

Football West Referee Co-ordinator Simon Hicks said: “Jess, Caleigh and Libby have been performing very well in both our Men’s and Women’s competitions this season and their appointment as the first female-only officiating team is a great indicator that our referee development initiatives are succeeding.

“We hope that this will encourage other females to take up refereeing and, with another free female-only Level 4 Referee course coming up on Saturday 5 September, now is the perfect opportunity to get involved.”

Females aged 14 and over keen to become a referee can sign up for our last course of the year HERE
