Football West and Fremantle City recently teamed up to bring through the latest group of young female referees.
The two-night Referee Level 4 Course at Wauhop Park was funded through a Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries grant which Fremantle City successfully applied for.
The DLGSC’s Targeted Participation Program provides funding for organisations to promote participation and active engagement of WA communities in sport and active recreation.
Fremantle City Girls Co-ordiantor Mary Watson said the club used the $5,000 grant to promote girls, leadership and participation.
“First we had a ‘Come & Try’ open day which attracted 100 girls to a free skill session run voluntarily by our club coaches,” Mary said.
“Then there was a free Skill Acquisition Program coaching course. The grant paid for fifteen 11-to-17 year old girls to start their coaching careers and the course was full.
“Then recently we have had the free girls refereeing course, which also covered their regos and uniforms. That also had funding for fifteen.”
Mary thanked Football West for its involvement in the referee and coaching courses.
She said Fremantle City’s target was ultimately to have a 50-50 split of male and female players. She said currently 40% of their registered players were female, with a 25% increase last year, but that the club wanted to involve them in other ways.
“It’s not enough to just have a huge number of female players,” she said.
“We want to do more than have them playing. We want to offer leadership opportunities, with the hope they will go back and be role models in the club and coach the 10-to-12 year olds.”
Football West Referee Development Officer Frank Moretti said all the participants had successfully completed the course.
“Full marks to Fremantle City on obtaining the funding, this has enabled us to bring through another 11 referees, fully registered and kitted out,” he said.
“Football West has another free Female Only Referee Level 4 course coming up on 5 September. This is the final course for the year, so anyone wanting to attend should register as a matter of urgency as spots are limited.”
The 5 September course takes place at the Football West Education Centre, Gibbney Reserve, Maylands. To sign up CLICK HERE. All applicants mut be at least 14 years old.
