With new Women’s State League Division One champions South West Phoenix gifted three points through a forfeit from Mandurah City, attention moved to the contest for the runners-up spot.
Sorrento will head into this Sunday’s final round with a two-point lead over ECU Joondalup following the Round 13 matches.
The Gulls may not have been able to keep pace with Phoenix but they look set to be the best of the rest after their 4-0 defeat of Perth AFC.
Jacqueline Nellany struck first seven minutes before half-time, with the other goals arriving after the interval from Jayde Keogh, Pia Sniehotta and Kaley Cornell.
ECU are the division’s second highest scorers and they matched Sorrento’s return on the weekend with a 4-1 victory away at Gwelup Croatia.
Frankie Murray scored twice to take her season’s tally to 12, following Tinette Van Niekerk’s opener. Danielle Maton completed the Jacks’ win, not long after Ieesha Caton had pulled one back for Gwelup.
Fourth-place UWA Nedlands were held 0-0 away at Balga, Sharon Clark gave Armadale a 1-0 derby win at Gosnells City, while two goals in swift succession just before the break were enough for Stirling Lions to claim a 2-0 victory at Port Kennedy. Grainne Gallagher scored first on 41 minutes and two minutes later Chelsea Russell added a second.
Northern Redbacks missed the opportunity to go level on points with Women’s Amateur League leaders Fremantle City after the two sides played out a 1-1 draw at Celebration Park.
Fon Piggott struck first for Fremantle on 68 minutes. And although Siena Crevacore equalised 14 minutes from time, Redbacks were unable to find the winner they required.
The draw means Fremantle hold a three-point lead over their rivals with one match to play. Redbacks are at Curtin University this Sunday, while Fremantle travel to UWA Nedlands.
While Redbacks still have ambitions of taking the title, they will drop to third if they lose to Curtin at Edinburgh Oval. Sophie Fletcher scored Curtin’s goal after only 10 minutes in the 1-0 win at Subiaco on the weekend.
Captain Lucinda Grey and Ashley Harling both scored hat-tricks and Alisha Mah and Lucy Davidson a brace each in UWA Nedlands’ 14-0 win at Balga.
