It may be a different kind of football for the Stubbs family but son of a gun Beau is making his own mark at his Kick It. Fives hub.
Beau has been turning heads on the pitch with his hard running and sweet left peg, while his father Dave was once the games record holder at Railways in the local Aussie Rules competition in Kalgoorlie.
Beau, 8, attributes his success thus far in the round ball code to the practice he has put in since taking up the sport two years ago.
“I enjoy just having fun, passing and seeing my teammates,” he said. “I just kept on practising and practising.”
Dave has been getting into the spirit of the competition, too, taking up game leader duties for his son’s team the Tornadoes.
“If you don’t have an umpire you don’t play sport so I enjoy it, and if it makes him happy it makes me happy,” he said.
Dave, who co-designed Railways’ indigenous round jumper in 2019, praised the pathways sport provides for young people across the community.
“It’s great, the pathways that sport delivers lead to opportunities, not only in sport but later in life. It will probably an impact not only on indigenous communities but also non-indigenous ones.”
