Kretowicz keeps Knights on top

Western Knights continued their flawless start in Men’s State League Division One with a 1-0 win over Stirling Lions at Macedonia Park.

The league’s leading scorer Alex Kretowicz continued his hot streak with the game’s only goal on 34 minutes.

Kretowicz has now scored in five consecutive games for Knights and has taken his tally to seven for the season.

The result maintains Western Knights’ two-point lead over Forrestfiield United and gives them a sixth win in as many games this year.

Second-placed Forrestfield were the only other team to win away from home as they defeated Ashfield 2-1.

Oliver Parry netted a timely first goal of the campaign in first half stoppage time before Mitchell Crocker seemingly made the points safe with 11 minutes to play.

Ashfield set up a grandstand finish when Evans Maranga converted from the penalty spot five minutes from the end, but they ran out of time as Forrestfield remained unbeaten.

Elsewhere, Quinns FC kept pace with the top two as they recorded a 2-0 win over Subiaco at Gumblossom Park.

A goal in each half did the job for the hosts as Kieron Craig opened the scoring on 14 minutes.

Sam Wynne then continued his fine start to the season, as the former Joondalup United striker bagged his sixth goal of the season before the hour mark.

Fourth met fifth at Kingsway Reserve as Olympic Kingsway and Fremantle City played out a 1-1 draw.

Riley Van Dieken struck the opener for City on the hour mark, but Cameron Murray equalised with three minutes left on the clock to earn a share of the spoils.

Finally, Joondalup United and Mandurah City both pushed into mid-table with 4-2 wins over Swan United and UWA Nedlands respectively.

Ehjayson Henry scored a hat-trick in what was arguably the individual performance of the day as Joondalup United recorded a second win of the season against Swan United.

They had to do it the hard way as bottom side Swan went 2-1 up in the second half thanks to goals from Albert Amankwaa and Brennan Borzecki, following Jamie Gibson’s opener.

It looked as though the visitors first points of the season were going to be registered before Henry’s spectacular quickfire treble.

The substitute struck with 15 minutes to play before netting in the 86th and 90th minutes to give United the win.

Mandurah also came from behind to win by the same score line, having gone behind on three minutes when UWA’s Derrick Data registered the opener.
