Mwale holds nerve in North Perth win

A penalty five minutes from time converted by Dalitso Mwale ensured North Perth United maintained a four-point lead in the Belt Up Amateur Premier Division as they overcame UWA Nedlands 2-1.

Lucas-Joel Munoz-Despierre had put United in front early in the second half but it looked like they might have to settle for a point after Blair Harding brought Nedlands back on terms. However, Mwale kept his cool to give North Perth the win.

It was a similar tale for second-place Maddington White City, who relinquished a lead at Joondalup United before winning 2-1.

David Sarria’s early strike for Maddington was cancelled out by Anthony Taylor’s third goal of the campaign. But Chris Sparks found a winner and City remain well and truly in the title hunt with six matches remaining.

Leeming Strikers stay third after they beat South West Phoenix in a game of five goals and three red cards.

Strikers were set for a routine three points after Scott McDowell and skipper Ben Greaves put them 2-0 up before half-time. However, Lee Stewart quickly pulled a goal back and Phoenix levelled 10 minutes into the second half through Matthew Pastega. Leeming recouped and David Palin had the hosts back in front, before Leeming’s Tom Grant and both of Phoenix’s goalscorers were given their marching orders inside the final 20 minutes.

Kwinana United failed to keep pace with the front three, needing a late Sean Troup goal to salvage a 1-1 home draw with Quinns. Skipper David Long netted for the visitors in the first half.

Gojam Nyuon’s penalty two minutes into stoppage time gave Jaguar FC a 1-1 draw at Hamersley Rovers, who had led since the fifth minute through Ale Loi’s goal.

Finally, Wembley Downs went behind to Lindon Bridger’s early effort before hitting back in style after half-time to defeat Queens Park 5-1. Connor O’Hanlon led the way with a hat-trick, with the other goals from Juraj Galba and Cameron Davies.
