As the only girl on her Kick It. Fives side, Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s Harper Anderson was surprised when she heard the name of her newly formed team was going to be the Bad Boys.
A high-energy player known off the pitch for her big ideas and advocacy – at the age of just seven Harper led a successful push to get recycling bins installed in the centre of Kalgoorlie – Harper was not about to sit on her hands.
She quickly ordered an alteration to her side’s navy blue uniform, with the word ‘Boys’ crossed out and replaced by the word ‘Girl’ in vibrant pink lettering.
It is not the only way Harper stands out on the pitch, with her competitive streak evident each time she takes to the field, even when she faces up to close friends.
“The best part about Kick It. is you get to see your friends along the way and you can beat them!” she told Football West during her team’s match with the Tigers on Saturday at the Goldfields Oasis.
Harper, who netted a goal in the Bad Boys’ previous contest with Tornadoes, has high hopes for this season.
“I scored one last time but I’d like to score another one this time,” she said. “My target is to score 10 goals … one for each game.”
Around a quarter of the participants in the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Kick It. Fives competition are female, with girls as young as five taking part.
