The Women’s State League Division One title race looks a straight fight between South West Phoenix and Sorrento after Sunday’s Round 11 fixtures.
Phoenix held off a game UWA Nedlands to win 3-2 and maintain their four-point lead over Sorrento, who downed Gwelup Croatia 2-1.
With only five matches remaining, it would be asking a lot for Perth AFC in third and eight points adrift mount a challenge.
Nicole Suttie was again on target for Phoenix, while Savannah Olsthoorn and captain Shauna Wetherell also netted as the leaders led 3-1 at the break.
Jess Pillera added to Erin Armstrong’s earlier effort for the visitors to reduce the deficit to one goal, but UWA were unable to find an equaliser and the result saw them slip a place to fourth and nine points off the pace.
Sorrento would have been confident of victory at second-bottom Gwelup yet they also found themselves in a tussle.
Claudia Manigodich put the Gulls in front 10 minutes after the break, but the visitors would have been concerned when Klaudia Mikulic levelled on 75 minutes. However, skipper Jodie Brough came up with a winner to maintain Sorrento’s hopes of catching Phoenix.
Perth AFC recorded a sixth win in seven games thanks to a 2-0 victory at Balga. Emma Young got the opener after only two minutes and Angela Cheaib made the game safe early in the second half.
Rozina Kebede scored a hat-trick and Frankie Murray two as ECU Joondalup beat basement side Gosnells City 5-0, Erica Buccella got the only goal in Armadale’s 1-0 win at Stirling Lions, while Danielle Brown and Cerys Watts struck after the break as Mandurah City won their derby with Port Kennedy 2-0.
Fremantle City have a five-point lead at the top of the Women’s Amateur Division following their 6-0 win over UWA Nedlands and Northern Redbacks’ goalless draw with Curtin University
Alice Vandermeiren and Maria Garcia both scored twice for Fremantle, with Jessica Mitchell and Ashlee Byrne also on the scoresheet.
In the day’s other game Subiaco beat Balga 1-0. Sarah Munns notched the only goal 13 minutes from time.
