Phoenix secure Division One title

South West Phoenix are the 2020 Women’s State League Division One champions.

Phoenix completed the job with two rounds to spare by defeating Port Kennedy 3-1 on Sunday while nearest rivals UWA Nedlands and Sorrento were dropping points.

The weekend results leave Phoenix eight points clear at the top.

UWA Nedlands slipped to third after losing 1-0 at Armadale, Hannah Blackman netting nine minutes from time.

Sorrento are now second despite being held 2-2 at Sorrento.

Emily Harrison opened the scoring for Lions, who were pegged back by Jodie Brough’s equaliser only for Monique Jelaska to restore Stirling’s lead before the break. Courtney Pipes scored Sorrento’s second equaliser but it was not enough to extend their interest in the title race for another week.

A hat-trick from Angela Cheaib helped Perth AFC to a 4-0 win over Gosnells City, while ECU Joondalup beat Mandurah City by the same scorline – Amy Buchanan (2), Frankie Murray and Tinette Van Niekerk the scorers.

Balga and Gwelup Croatia swapped places in 10th and 11th following Balga’s 2-0 win. Catherine Aftera got the opener just after half-time and Joaephine Nkuo made the points safe nine minutes from full-time.
