Football West Referee Development Officer Frank Moretti visited Woodvale Secondary College recently to give a presentation to Year 11 students.
The talk was to 10 boys and four girls doing their Vocational Education and Training (VET) Certificate II in Sport and Recreation. It was for the unit of competency: continuously improve officiating skills and knowledge and concentrated on areas such as a match officials’ career path and adapting technology.
Woodvale SC Boys Football Co-ordinator Tony Ratcliff said: “It was brilliant in terms of what the kids needed, it was spot on.
“People we do our VET through, a lot of it is generic. Having Frank come in was ideal as he was very specific and it was in the perfect context. It was really good. I found it amazing what he did and how he explained it to the students.”
Mr Ratcliff said of the 14 youngsters completing the unit, two were already Level 4 referees.
He added: “Local primary schools have a Glory Cup competition and I have taken my kids to referee the games, including to Aubin Grove for the finals.”
Mr Moretti said: “It was very enjoyable and the students were very engaged with the presentation. It is good that Football West are able to assist with local schools and it is satisfying that we were so well received.”
Mr Ratcliff, a teacher at Woodvale since 2000, said his former students include W-League official Adrien Liechti plus Socceroos international Ryan Wiliams and current Brisbane Roar defender Scott Neville.
